The beauty of the new TV series Superman and Lois is easily the fact that you don’t have to know anything about the complicated continuity of the various DC superhero shows that have been dominating the CW since Arrow debuted in 2012. Back then, it seemed unlikely we’d get a small-screen version of Superman, but here we are, in 2021, with a down-to-Earth, sweet family drama version of Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

But, just because the new series doesn’t require deep knowledge of DC Comics or the other CW DC superhero shows, Superman and Lois nonetheless will reward you if you keep your eyes peeled for cool callbacks and Easter eggs to the long history of Superman. And, perhaps the best Easter egg is a list of names on Lois and Clark’s family chalkboard. Early in the first episode, as the super-couple is grappling with their complex scheduler and the fact that Clark has been laid-off from his job at The Daily Planet, we briefly see a chalkboard in the kitchen. Here’s what it says:

“Dr. Donner, class sign-up.” and “Call Siegel and Schuster.”

So, who are those people? Well, Richard Donner was the first director of the first two Christopher Reeve Superman films And, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were the creators of the character of Superman, who has been flying around saving the day since 1933.

Lois and Clark might be parents in this new series, but basically, their to-do list included a checklist for getting in touch with their metaphorical parents here in the real world. Without those three names on that chalkboard, this family wouldn’t even exist.

Superman and Lois is airing new episodes on Tuesdays on the CW. BUT, you can watch those episodes streaming for free the next day on the CW App right here.
