Not the way you think it would go.

If you get an actor of the caliber of Tom Hardy to play Eddie Brock/Venom, there’s no way you can just let him get away after one movie. In this origin story of Spider-Man’s greatest adversaries, viewers learn how Eddie Brock came to be paired with an alien parasite or symbiote. Although Spidey is conspicuously absent from this Sony movie, then at the very end you realize where he was hiding all along … in the final post-credits scene. Not in the way you think, though.

Spoilers ahead for Venom. You have been warned.

After the credits begin to roll and Eminem’s angry rap “Venom” rings through your ears, there is a first post-credits scene that comes a few minutes into the credits. This brief clip previews the inevitable Venom sequel and who will be featured in it. A sequel hasn’t been confirmed yet and the reviews have been all over the place, but it’s unlikely that Sony will turn down the opportunity for a sequel. Regardless, there’s still no web-slinging Spider-Man (Tom Holland) swinging into the frame in this scene. Instead, the first post-credits sequence reveals Woody Harrelson as another Venom-esque creature; Carnage. Will this sequel with Woody Harrelson ever happen? It all depends on how Venom does at the box office.

Then as the credits come to an end, it becomes abundantly clear that the Sony and Marvel marketing departments ran out of ideas on how to advertise their next big Spider-Man movie. They shoehorn in a new trailer for Into the Spider-Verse and even they know it’s such a stretch that the words “Meanwhile in another universe…” flash onto the screen. Yes, this is technically Spider-Man related. In Into the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker, Peni Parker, Spider-Man Noir, and Spider-Ham all come together in Morales’ universe where he is the new Spider-Man.

The trailer is cool, but it’s not worth sticking around for unless you want to see another teaser for Marvel and Sony’s animated Spider-People multiverse project, which does admittedly look amazing.
