As Nic Cage once said in Ghost Rider II, “Hell yes!”

A new Netflix series is coming in 2021 called History of Swear Words and it will be hosted by non-other than Nicolas Cage. Throughout the pseudo-documentary series, Cage will interview language experts, comedians, etymologists, and pop culture critics. Basically, he’s going to get to the fucking bottom of these swear word history-mysteries once and for all.

Interestingly, History of Swear Words will be Nicolas Cage’s first TV series, ever. Although he’s set to play the Tiger King sometime in the near future for Netflix, this series, as a host, is the first time he’s been “cast” — so to speak — in a regular role on TV, even if he is just playing himself.

History of Swear Words is produced by Funny or Die, which isn’t to say it won’t be a great resource for teaching language history to your potty-mouthed teenagers. But, this series might actually be a little more educational than you might think. Should you watch it with the kids? Maybe!

One of the experts consulted on The History of Swear Words is former Merriam-Webster editor Kory Stamper, who is also the author of the super-cool book Word By Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries.

If you like looking up videos online where people explain common misconceptions about word definitions, Kory Stamper arguably invented that art form. With Merriam-Webster’s Ask the Editor series, she helped destroy fake-snobbery about the plural of “octopus,” and has brilliantly pointed out that “irregardless,” is totally a word, despite the fact that Grammarly just tried to make delete that. Stamper’s involvement (however large or small) in The History of Swear Words is a really good sign. It means that this show will be smart as well as funny.

History of Swear Words hits Netflix on January 5, 2021.
