This Toddler’s Viral Reaction to Riding an Escalator Is Mesmerizing

"What a day!"

This has been a long year and a half for many of us. The pandemic had us all more stuck to our homes than normal. Parents of little kids haven’t had access to a safe place to take their kids. And a viral video of a toddler heading out into the world after COVID-19 lockdowns is proof. His reaction to riding an escalator for the first time has gone viral, probably because it’s equal parts adorable and a reality check.

TikTok user almostmakesperfect recently posted a sweet clip of her son and herself out of the house. It looks like they’re at a mall or another indoor shopping center. Riding up the escalator while holding on to mom’s hand, the little boy was completely mesmerized.

Looking around, he hears his dad tell him they’re up on the third floor. “We’re on another floor,” the little boy says with the most adorable excitement in his voice. “What a day!” Mom shared the clip with the caption, “it’s the little things with covid kids.”

And she’s so right on this. It’s easy to forget when we’re lost in the grind of every day that our kids have been largely out of public spaces for the past year and a half. As a result, their lives have been really different than we wanted for them. Masks, social distancing, not being able to go to playdates, or large family parties.

But, for the kids who were newly born or even a toddler through the pandemic, they’ve not known much else. They’ve never been to the mall. Or to a gathering with a lot of people. They’re used to seeing people in masks, and they’re legitimately surprised by large crowds.

And for this toddler, his reaction to seeing the large open space and riding up the escalator was so exciting he proclaimed it to be a day to remember. And it quickly went viral on the platform with hundreds of thousands of people sharing in his joy of the everyday things we’re happy to finally start doing again.
