This Map Shows The Most Popular Streaming Service in Every State. It’s Super Surprising
Netflix dominates the global streaming wars but another platform is ahead in the United States.
For hundreds of millions of people around the world, streaming has become the go-to way to watch their favorite movies and TV shows. This has led to an all-out brawl between major streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, PBS Kids, and Disney+ constantly battling to get more subscribers. But which of the major streaming players reigns supreme? This map shows the most popular streaming service in every state and the most popular streaming service isn’t the one that you watch while you chill, shockingly enough.
To determine the top streaming service in each country, ElectricalDirect analyzed Google search volume for 42 different streaming services for every state (you can read the entire report here). And based on the results, there was a clear runaway winner in America’s streaming wars.
Netflix was the top streaming service in most countries by a massive margin, as the home of BoJack Horseman and Stranger Things is 94 different nations’ preferred method of entertainment consumption. This should not come as too much of a surprise, as Netflix is the service that has become almost synonymous with the streaming experience, as evidenced by the fact that the company reached over 207 million subscribers worldwide in the first quarter of this year.
What may shock people is that while Netflix dominates the globe in the streaming wars, it’s not actually the number one in the United States. Amazon Prime is America’s top streaming platform, at least based on how often people are searching for it. The map shows that Prime Video was the most searched streaming service for 37 states, with Netflix being the top-searched in only six states.
In terms of actual subscribers, it’s actually not clear who is ahead between Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in America, as Amazon Prime Video only revealed the number of global subscribers in its most recent report. But this study does make it clear that Amazon Prime is a legitimate challenger to Netflix’s stronghold on streaming supremacy.
Outside of the two major platforms, only ESPN and Hulu were the top in more than one state. But given the constantly growing popularity of streaming, it’s clear that more and more streaming services will emerge over the next few years. And Netflix and Prime Video will need to hold off potential challengers — like Peacock and HBO Max — as well as battling each other.
