Ben Affleck Says Adam Driver Saved His Son's Birthday Party

In an interview on last night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, Ben Affleck talked Matt Damon, Tom Brady, and his new Mighty Ducks-but-with-basketball movie The Way Back. But the story of the night actually started with his next movie, The Last Duel, that he’s currently shooting in France with Adam Driver, better known to Affleck’s kid as Kylo Ren.

“My son knows that I do movies that are kind of fake, and his mom does movies, and that’s all pretend, but he also knows that Star Wars is real,” Affleck explained. “There’s guys out there fighting the emperor, and that job needs to get done, and I can do my fake shit and someone can do an important job.”

Affleck took a break from filming to fly home for his son’s eighth birthday party, the kind of thing a dad — especially a divorced dad who has limited time with his kid — doesn’t miss. Unfortunately, the present he’d ordered didn’t arrive in time. Luckily, Driver had already come to the rescue, arranging for a bunch of Kylo Ren toys, a signed picture, and a video wishing Affleck’s son happy birthday to be sent to the party.

It’s a super nice gesture to you and me, but to Affleck’s kid, it was earth-shattering.

“I watched him open up all the presents,” he recalled. “And I said, ‘My presents didn’t get here on time, but I did get a present from somebody who really wanted to make sure you got a gift.’ And he goes, ‘Who?’ And I said, ‘Kylo Ren.'”

Driver had saved the day with gifts that meant as much to Affleck as they did to his kid.

“Adam made me a hero to my kid, and I will never, ever, ever forget that.”
