Why Families Should Watch the Kids’ Choice Awards Together

Two words for mom and dad: Kenan Thompson.

This story was produced in partnership with Nickelodeon.

There’s no spectacle quite like the shrieks and screams of a group of kids as a beloved celebrity is doused with that brightly-colored, mysteriously-concocted substance known as Slime. It’s a sight you probably remember from your childhood, whether on Slime Time Live or Double Dare or the Kids’ Choice Awards. And if you haven’t tuned in to the latter since Blink-182 won favorite band, 2021 is the year to rediscover it. That’s because, first and foremost, your kids will be watching it, making it a prime opportunity for family bonding. And that’s not the only good news for mom and dad, because the host of this year’s edition of the show has plenty of cred with today’s parents. Yes, it is none other than Nick GOAT, now father of three, Kenan Thompson.

WATCH: Tune in to the 2021 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards on Saturday, March 13, at 7:30/6:30c.

Thompson, who recently fulfilled his destiny to become a sitcom dad on Kenan, is returning to the channel where he got his first big break. The baby-faced Thompson of All That and Kenan & Kel is gone, but in his place is one of the most famous comedians in America, the iron man of Saturday Night Live whose jokes are age-appropriate for kids and nostalgia-inspiring for parents. He’s a cheery, funny dude — exactly what you want in an awards show host.

But while Thompson might be the big draw for parents, there is plenty of enjoyment to share with your kids. Nickelodeon is promising the “biggest Slime-ultanious Sliming of all time!” Is your heart really so cold, your sense of humor so mature, that you won’t let out a little shriek, at least internally, watching buckets of Slime be dumped on famous people?

Teen heartthrob turned mature pop star Justin Bieber, the always hilarious Tiffany Haddish, and Hamilton himself, Lin Manuel Miranda are just some of the A-list celebrities who will join Thompson and all that Slime for the night’s festivities.

And while the in-person audience will be understandably limited, there will be a massive fan wall showcasing families enjoying the show from the comfort of their own homes. Another creative solution to the pandemic problems is the Kids’ Choice Awards Blimp that will be embarking on a world tour, taking audiences to fun, surprising places all night long. And no, we don’t know where…then it wouldn’t be a surprise!

But even if Kenan, Slime, Bieber, and blimps aren’t your thing, watching the Kids’ Choice Awards with your kids is still a no-brainer. You can regale them with tales of Nickelodeon classics like Rugrats and Are You Afraid of the Dark? that were huge back in your day, a move that might induce a chorus of groans from kids who don’t remember what the world was like before SpongeBob. But no matter what you talk about, you’ll be spending quality time together, creating a memory they’ll look back on fondly when they’re watching the 2055 Kids’ Choice Awards with your grandchildren.

The Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards hosted by Kenan Thompson will air on Saturday, March 13, at 7:30/6:30c.
