Dad Risks Life to Save Daughter From Speeding Hit-and-Run Car

by Amanda Tarlton

A California dad recently risked his life to save his daughter from a speeding car. In footage released Friday by the Los Angeles Police Department, Michael Devore pushes his 11-year-old aside so the vehicle hits him instead.

The video of the incident, which took place on November 16, 2018, shows a red sedan speeds toward Devore and his daughter Ryan while they’re walking in a crosswalk. “I knew right then and there they weren’t going to stop, and my daughter was the one that was in line to be hit,” Devore told KTLA.

The dad quickly shoves his daughter forward to safety before he’s hit by the oncoming vehicle, landing on the sidewalk. After striking Devore, the car continues driving as bystanders rush to the man’s aid.

According to police reports, Devore suffered a broken right femur and may now need a knee replacement as a result of the hit-and-run injury. Ryan, however, was largely unharmed with just a few scratches on her face.

“I was angry,” Devore said to WTNH. “I mean I tried to get up even with a broken femur that was broke in multiple places.”

And while authorities say that not only is Devore lucky to be alive but that he likely saved Ryan’s life, he explained to KTLA, “I’m not a hero, I’m just a dad… I just did what I was supposed to do.”

The LAPD is still looking for the driver of the vehicle. She’s described as an elderly, heavyset woman between the ages of 60 and 65 years old with white hair. Police also believe that the red car, which they say may be a Toyota Camry, has disabled plates.

Anyone with information regarding the hit-and-run can call the LAPD at 877-527-3247 or provide an anonymous tip by contacting the L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
