Traeger’s New Smart Smoker Is a Brisket-Cooking Marvel

It helps takes a lot of the guesswork out of grilling so you can kick back and chase the kids around while the bark forms on your brisket.

At first glance, the Traeger Pro 575 pellet-style grill looks a lot like the meat-smokers the storied company has been pushing out since 1985. But the brand-new model features some modern technology to help you get that juicy, fork-tender ribs and brisket without much fuss.

The Pro 575 has, as you might have guessed, 575 square inches of cooking capacity. Per Traeger, that’s enough to cook 24 burgers, five racks of ribs, or six chickens at once. The grill, which uses the same pressed wood pellets as other Traeger models, and there’s a variable-speed fan to allow you to get hit — and most importantly — maintain that perfect temperature all day long. Traeger claims that the Pro series heats up faster than its older models, so that’s a nice bonus as well.

The standout feature of the 575, however, is the brain hiding beyond the grill grates. The grill (and it’s big brother) features Traeger’s WiFire technology that lets you monitor and control the ‘cue from your phone. Basically, the technology, which has before this moment been in Traegers higher-end models, helps takes a lot of the guesswork out of grilling so you can kick back and chase the kids around while the bark forms on your brisket.

Through the app you can choose a specific recipe. From there, it guides you through any necessary prep — marinades, rubs, trimming — that needs to happen before you get it on the grill. It’s a grill that helps you make delicious food even before you step outside.Once everything is ready to go, you can throw your food on the grill and insert the included thermometer.

The grill automatically adjusts its settings to those specified by the recipe, and you can make your own tweaks in the companion app even if you step away from home — of if you’re not following one of the recipes. You’ll receive a notification when your food reaches temperature, so you’ll never overcook anything again. Of course, you don’t have to use your phone every time. A control panel on the front of the pellet box lets you ignite the grill and adjust the temperature sans wifi.

If you want to make great barbecue without spending the entire weekend chained to your grill, Traeger’s Pro series is a great option. It’s available in all black or, our favorite, a model that’s black except for a sharp-looking bronze lid that makes it stand out in a crowd.
