What happens with award-winning rum blends with Mr Black’s coffee liqueur? Well, a damn good espresso martini, for one. Or White Russian...or cold brew Irish coffee...the list goes on. Australian coffee liquor brand Mr Black has collaborated with fellow Australian distiller Bundaberg Rum to launch a special-edition Rum Barrel Coffee Liqueur.

A Closer Look At What Makes This One-Of-A-Kind Spirit So Good:

Coffee and rum are a perfect match, especially when one award-winning Australian distillery meets another. “I was like the proverbial kid in a candy store raiding the warehouse of a 140 year old rum distillery in search of special casks for this project,” said Tom Baker, Mr Black Founder.

Mr Black’s signature coffee liqueur was rested for three months in European and American Oak casks that previously contained Bundaberg’s flagship rums, which means that smooth cold-brew liqueur got the chance to mingle with the flavors of sugar cane grown in the fertile red volcanic soil of the Australian city of Bundaberg.

“We also convinced them to give us two barrels of their top shelf ‘Master Distillers Edition’ — which coincidentally had won World’s Best Rum back in 2018. Extraordinary stuff — we used it all in the final blend,” he added.

What resulted was a blend that has notes of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, toffee brown sugar, sweet raisins, and spices. “The fruit and spice notes of aged rum just sing with Mr Black and the end result is an extraordinarily decadent blend of coffee and rum, that still has our characteristic Mr Black balance and refinement,” Baker said.

The Best Way To Enjoy This Drink

This coffee-based spirit has a limited-edition run of 2,400 bottles, so you might want to snag one to enjoy during the late days of summer — the brand says it’s best enjoyed “over ice whilst relaxing in the sun,” after all. Mr Black recommends pouring 60mL of the liqueur over ice. That being said, on the company’s site there are a lot of killer recipes for espresso martinis, cold brew Irish coffees, and more. I would imagine that this liqueur would work well with many of these recipes in place of their signature Mr Black Coffee Liqueur. “There’s no wrong way to drink it,” the brand says, also suggesting it with ice cream. A Rum Barrel Coffee Liqueur affogato? Yes, please.
