Here’s Exactly How Much Space You Can Rent For $1,500 In 30 U.S. Cities

According to data from the National Multifamily Housing Council, 37 percent of households in the U.S rent rather than own where they live, but you don’t have to be a renter to know the rent is too damn high. But you still might want to know how much bang you could get for your buck. Pulling their numbers from the real estate website Yardi Matrix, Rent Cafe figured out exactly how much square footage $1,500 rents you, from San Diego to Boston. If nothing else, the results should discourage you from stashing your family somewhere and running off to start that Weezer cover band.

Researchers compared the average apartment size to the average rent in the site’s 30 most popular cities (sorry Hoboken) and determined how much space $1,500 per month could get you. To put it in perspective, they created this handy infographic that compares each city spatially. Each square is to scale, with the exception of New York. That’s just how small apartments in the Big Apple are.

Much like Elvis, you may be better suited for Memphis, where you’ll get nearly 2,000 square feet for the same amount of money that will get you 271 square feet in New York. Still, there’s an increasing amount of research out there that shows owning a home is better for your kid’s future, if you can swing it. Otherwise don’t mess with Texas because you might need their cheap real estate one day.
