Why You Should Encourage Your Kid To Play An Instrument

Executive level brain function refers to self control, working memory, attention and focus, and a host of other stuff that correlates strongly to long-term academic performance. It’s increasingly the focus of educational curriculums as early as pre-K, and a Boston Children’s Hospital study found that one of the best ways to improve it is by learning an instrument. That’s cause for celebration by anyone who would prefer their kid spends time doing something other than cramming for standardized tests, but you shouldn’t get too excited – “music” is going to be a generous way to describe whatever noise your kid makes with an instrument for a very long time.
