Listen to “Just A Simple Sponge” From the Upcoming SpongeBob Musical
The first song for the upcoming 'SpongeBob SquarePants — The New Musical' released today.
He may live in a pineapple under the sea, but, this December, SpongeBob SquarePants is finding a new home on the Broadway stage. SpongeBob SquarePants – The New Musical takes the Nickelodeon O.G. Animalia Porifera and plops him and his friends in a nautical nonsensical play. And, if you’re wondering how that will translate, the answer is pretty well: the show debuted last June in Chicago and received rave reviews for its creative story, strong acting, and, most of all, killer soundtrack. Although it closed down after a short run, the show now is finding new life in New York and will open at the Palace Theater in early December. To prepare for the debut, producers released a song from the show, and it seems every bit as whacky and smart as the source material.
“(Just A) Simple Sponge”, which Entertainment Weekly posted, is an emotional power ballad that hits all the right notes, showing the oddly jacked, anthropomorphic sponge having to look deep inside himself in order to get what he truly wants in life. It also has the patented SpongeBob absurdity, tossing in nonsequiturs about saving the world and playing his nose like a whistle. Panic frontman Brendan seemed pretty jazzed to be part of the show, saying to EW, “I’m so happy I was able to bring a song to life that marries two of my favorite things for the SpongeBob SquarePants Broadway musical.”
The musical may have one of the most stacked songwriting lineups in musical history. Along with the popular emo pop punk band, several huge names contributed in writing songs for the show, including T.I., John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, Sara Bareilles, Aerosmith, They Might Be Giants, and many more. Broadway’s Hamilton-led pop culture resurgence likely contributed to the celebrity interest in the soundtrack, but one thing is certain: SpongeBob fans roll deep.
