Last October, Ryan Nelson earned the inaugural Fatherly Fund grant with his plans to build a wheelchair-accessible swing for his 7-year-old daughter, who suffers from type 1 spinal muscular atrophy. Nelson, who has a background in mechanical engineering, had already drafted the plans and just needed 2 things: some money for materials, and time. Thanks to a crowdsourced vote on Fatherly’s Facebook page, the money was taken care of. Thanks to the weather warming up, Nelson finally got the time. And now Mary has, hands down, the coolest swing in Alabama.
