The biggest Marvel movie, perhaps ever, will also probably the longest. In fact, you may want to plan to for bathroom breaks for Avengers: Endgame. The directors of the film — Joe and Anthony Russo — are still cutting the film down to its final theatrical edit, but it’s looking like a movie that is over 3 hours will be the result. Here’s the twist though: apparently test audiences want it long.
“For the first three screenings, not a single person got up to go to the bathroom,” Anthony Russo told Collider on Wednesday. And, apparently, this is a version of the movie that is three hours long.
Will the Russos push for the longer runtime? Considering this could be the final Marvel movie featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Chris Evans as Captain America, it feels very, very possible that a hefty length will cover a ton of ground. And, if the test audiences are any indication, the movie is exciting enough to warrant sitting for three straight hours to watch it all.
Then again, parents with kids might feel differently when Avengers: Endgame actually comes out. It’s been a while since a huge blockbuster — which attracted both adult and children — has been three hours long. This was true of all three of the Lord of the Rings movies and The Hobbit movies, but it would be crazy for anyone to say they didn’t feel the length of those films. Especially if you’re seeing those movies with kids!
Still, Endgame looks awesome and promises to give kids and adults something a superhero movie hasn’t done in a long, long time: an actual ending! This notion is supported by a comment from Joe Russo in the same interview. “…This is a culmination film of 22 movies, it’s a lot of storytelling to work into it.”
So, If Endgame needs 3 hours to allow for a sense of closure, then maybe, it will be worth it. So far, the people have seen the movie, seem to agree.
Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26.
