‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Is For Kids, But the ’90s Optimism Is For Parents

The fearless leader of 1995's 'Star Trek: Voyager' – Captain Janeway — will return for the new Nickelodeon kids' series next year.

Nickelodeon / CBS

If you were a kid in the ’90s, it was hard to escape Star Trek. Yes, it was always arguably cooler to say you liked Star Wars on the playground, but the truth is, from 1990 to 1999 — a time many of today’s parents were growing up — there just wasn’t any new Star Wars. But there was a ton of Trek. And now, there’s a new animated Star Trek kids’ show, Star Trek: Prodigy coming to Nickelodeon, and it’s just as much for today’s children as it is for their nostalgic ’90s parents.

Captain Janeway — the mama bear of Star Trek: Voyager – is back! According to Nickelodeon and CBS, Kate Mulgrew (also famous for Orange Is the New Black) will reprise her role as Kathryn Janeway in the new children’s show Star Trek: Prodigy, set to hit Nickelodeon sometime in 2021. Here’s what Mulgrew said bout returning to the part of Captain Janeway:

“I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can’t wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy. How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. To be at the helm again is going to be deeply gratifying in a new way for me.”

Created by Kevin and Dan Hageman of LegoMovie and Trollhunters fame, Star Trek: Prodigy, it was previously revealed, would feature orphan teens stealing a discarded starship. Will Janeway be their parental-figure? For all of Star Trek: Voyager, Janeway acted a surrogate parent to her starship crew, guiding them home to Earth after accidentally being flung millions of lightyears away from anything they knew. Mulgrew, a parent herself, has been very candid over the years that her work on Star Trek was hard on her parenting life, simply because the hours needed to put in on a TV series in the ’90s were not great for families.

It’s yet to be revealed what exact role Janeway will have in Star Trek: Prodigy, but for parents who grew up in the ’90s, the voice of Janeway will be a familiar and comforting one. Like Captain Picard, Janeway’s sense of optimism and can-do leadership typified the mood of the ’90s. Today, as parents look for upbeat role modes for their kids, the return of Captain Janeway feels like it’s happening just in the nick of time. And, unlike Jean-Luc Picard, who drank Earl Grey tea, Janeway’s drink of choice was always “Coffee! Black!” Tired parents, trying to boldly go, can relate.

Star Trek: Prodigy will hit Nickelodeon sometime in 2021. The next new Star Trek series is Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, which will hit CBS All Access on October 15, 2020.
