SNL Christmas 2020: The 3 Best Sketches, From Horny Grinch to Kristen Wiig’s Mom Robe

Laugh along with Pete Davidson's Horny Grinch and Kristen Wiig's Sad Christmas Morning Mom

Kristen Wiig returned to Saturday Night Live for the show’s final installment of 2020, bringing her usual assured comedy chops, as well as touches of hope and bittersweetness to close out a truly awful year. The episode, which featured Dua Lipa as musical guest, ranked as good to very good SNL, with most of the sketches and pre-filmed segments boasting a Christmas theme. Lipa also guest-starred in a sketch and, while performing her second song, “Levitating,” sported a feathery hat that made her look like a jellyfish and has already inspired countless memes.  Weekend Update was strong, with jabs at Donald Trump and the annual funny switcheroo in which anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost swap each other’s jokes, resulting in a good-natured, though mortified Jost being forced to tease Scarlett Johansson.

Here are our favorite three sketches from the 2020 SNL Christmas episode. Watch below!

Kristen Wiig’s Christmas Robe

It’s Christmas morning and one family (Kristen Wiig, Beck Bennett, Chloe Fineman, Kyle Mooney) raps about all the great gifts they got. Well, everyone but Mom (Wiig). She likes her robe just fine, at least until she realizes it’s the one and only item Santa left her. Even her stocking is empty and, worse, the dog snagged a robe, too. The rap here is catchy, but no doubt waaaaay too many moms will relate to Wiig’s matriarch, who feels totally neglected yet still selflessly sets about making breakfast for everyone. People of America: it’s not too late to buy Mom a couple of more presents, ones she’ll actually appreciate!

Horny Grinch

This dirty little sketch is a hoot, as it presents a VERY happy Grinch (Pete Davidson) trundling down the step in a robe and tighty whities after an apparent evening-long threesome with a pretty swingin’ Whoville couple (Mikey Day and Kristen Wiig). Meanwhile, the couple’s kids (Chloe Fineman and Kyle Mooney) become increasingly befuddled (and then disgusted) as they start to figure out what went down upstairs during the night. Davidson, pardon the pun, stole the whole thing, and kudos to the costume and makeup departments for transforming Davidson so convincingly into the Grinch. Best line: “It’s not the only thing that grew three sizes.” We were green with envy.

Middle-Aged-Mutant Ninja Turtles Episode 2

One of the funniest bits of SNL‘s final show of 2020 actually didn’t make the cut due to time constraints, and it was an amusing animated short that envisions the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles all grown up. That means paunchy bellies, kids not coming home for the holidays, strained backs and other indignities now faced by the Middle-Aged Mutant Ninja Turtles. One of the Turtles even supports an orange villain, much to his family’s dismay.
