The New ‘Captain Underpants’ Trailer Is All About The Origins Of A Half-Naked Hero

DreamWorks’ highly-anticipated Captain Underpants movie just released its first trailer and the movie looks every bit as entertaining as the hugely popular 12 book series by Dav Pilkey. If you’re not an underpants fan, it’s the story of 2 prankster kids, George and Harold (voiced by comedian Kevin Hart and Silicon Valley‘s Thomas Middleditch) who hypnotize their principal (Ed Helms) and turn him into the titular half-naked hero.

It all kicks off with George and Harold pulling off practical jokes around their school and drawing comics like Captain Underpants. They seem like fun-loving kids, but not to the ‘worse principal in the world,’ Benny Krupp, who has it in for them. Before Krupp can put the boys in separate classes and destroy their friendship forever, George and Harold hypnotize him to believe he’s their made-up superhero, Captain Underpants. Even if your kid isn’t familiar with the book, they can relate to a guy who just wears a cape and underwear.

For those who are familiar, it’s exciting to see the books’ original artwork and fan details like Underpants’s catchphrase, “Tra-la-la!”, lovingly incorporated into this adaptation. Adults should take heart (and Hart) that top-notch comedic talent like Nick Kroll (Professor Poopypants) and writer Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him To The Greek) know there are grown-ups in the audience. But pack an extra pair of Fruit Of The Looms — just in case.
