Gina Carano Fired — Will Cara Dune Be Recast For ‘Mandalorian’ Season 3?

Most of Mando's posse survived Season 2, but one Rebel, turned anti-masker, won't return.

Somehow, Cara Dune will be (probably) written out of The Mandalorian Season 3. After a history of controversial statements on social media, actress Gina Carano has been fired by Lucasfilm. It’s unclear at this time if Carano’s character will be recast, or whether Mandalorian Season 3 will give a quick explanation as to why Cara Dune is no longer around. (Remember how quickly Poe Dameron explained Palpatine was back? Will it be like that?)

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm swiftly fired Carano after the actress shared a controversial post on Instagram (now-deleted) in which she compared the prosecution of European Jews by their neighbors to any potential discrimination Republicans might face from their non-Republican neighbors. Obviously, Carano’s statement has no basis as a historical analogy. As Arnold Schwarzenegger (a Republican) pointed out recently, the violent bigotry perpetuated by neighbors against their neighbors as a result of Nazism is very similar to the support the Capitol Rioters showed toward Donald Trump. In other words, Gina Carano clearly has this backward. Non-Trump supporters have no desire to murder and beat Trump supporters, but the opposite is very evident. Carano comparing the “persecution” of Republicans with the Holocaust is, yes, “abhorrent.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a rep for Lucasfilm stated: “…her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

Prior to this most recent social media post, Carano had posted endlessly about anti-science beliefs that COVID masks are pointless. She also supported conspiracy theories that Donald Trump won the 2020 election. According to THR, “They [Lucasfilm] have been looking for a reason to fire her for two months, and today was the final straw.”

For Star Wars people, the only downside here is that Cara Dune is one of a handful of strong female characters in the galaxy far, far away. Hopefully, The Mandalorian Season 3 will recast Cara Dune rather than killing her off entirely. The character, as conceived by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni is pretty cool. It’s not their fault Carano went and ruined it.

The Mandalorian Season 3 isn’t expected until 2022. The Book of Boba Fett hits Disney+ in 2021.
