Voltron: Defender of the Universe made its small screen debut more than 30 years ago, and despite only running for two seasons, it’s still regarded as one of the most iconic kid’s TV shows of all time. And thanks to the power of the internet, Voltron will soon be resurrected in LEGO form.
Last year, Leandro Tayag, aka len_d69, submitted his dope as hell LEGO Voltron model to the LEGO Idea Platform, which lets fans share their own ideas for new LEGO sets. Tayag’s incredible design immediately caught the attention of fans of the cartoon, and people began spreading the word in hopes of getting LEGO to notice.
In order to be reviewed by the official LEGO team, a submission needs to get 10,000 votes. The Voltron model was able to get 10,000 votes in just three weeks thanks to passionate fans who really wanted to see their favorite robotic hero in toy block form. Now, LEGO has announced that Tayag’s submission has been accepted and LEGO Voltron will soon become a reality.
This an apt time for Voltron to officially enter the world of LEGO, as Voltron: Legendary Defender, a recent reboot of the classic cartoon on Netflix, has been very well received by fans and critics alike, creating a new generation of fans and sparking some serious nostalgia for adults who grew up watching the original cartoon. It also does not hurt that Tayag’s design is simply fantastic, as his attention to detail and craftsmanship are on par with anything LEGO has to offer.
While LEGO has officially greenlit the design, it will take some time before the set will be available to the general public. LEGO’s set designers will need to re-engineer Voltron so that it meets the company’s requirements for an official set. But expect Voltron to officially hit stores sometime next year. Just in time for your kids to perfect their “Form Blazing Sword!” chant.
