Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake‘s son Silas may only be two-and-a-half years old, but that hasn’t stopped the celebrity couple from giving him a toddler version of “the talk.” Well, sort of. While promoting a sex-ed PSA video she made with Chelsea Handler at the 2018 MAKERS conference in Los Angeles, Biel revealed that she and Timberlake had begun teaching Silas about the basics of sex. Or, at least, the basics of the human body.
“I have a 2½-year-old [and] we’re starting [sexual education] now,” Biel explained. “We’re using technical terms … we shower together, and [we say], ‘This is what I’ve got. This is what you’ve got.’ We just talk about it. I know it’s really young, but I really believe that if you start this early, there’s no shame. I don’t want to tell him, ‘Keep your private parts,’ and this and that. It’s a beautiful thing. You have it and mine is different and it’s cool, man. We have to respect ourselves and respect each other. So I believe it starts really young.”
For parents, it can be difficult to know when to start talking to your kid about the birds and the bees. You don’t want to have these conversations too late in life, but you also fear that telling your kid too early might somehow screw them up in the long run.
And while people will likely judge Biel and Timberlake for exposing their kid to sex at too young of an age, there are actually benefits to talking about it early in a child’s life. Research has shown that opening up an honest and open dialogue about sexuality with your kid can give them a healthier perspective on the entire subject. And based on Biel’s comments, it seems that they are merely helping their son understand his body and know the importance of boundaries.
