The Fast & Furious franchise is still going strong nearly 20 years after it started. 2019 saw the release of the first spin-off film in the series—Hobbs and Shaw—and right before the year is out we’re getting something entirely new.
Fast & Furious: Spy Racers is an animated television show in the Fast & Furious universe. The main character, Tony Toretto, is Dominic Toretto’s (a.k.a. Vin Diesel’s) cousin. And we’ve got our first look at an exclusive clip that really gives you a sense of the show.
The clip is called “Big Rig Battle,” portraying as it does Tony and his crew’s attempted heist of a semi-trailer full of energy drinks. It opens with them firing smart projectiles that fly up, attach themselves to the sides of the truck, and project onto the rearview mirrors an image that shows no cars coming up from behind as opposed to the fleet that actually is.
And that’s not the only tech in the clip; paintball cannons, an electronic glove, superstrong magnetic handles, and a smartwatch also make an appearance. Apart from that, it feels pretty similar to an action set piece from a live-action Fast & Furious film, particularly the way it ends in a technically feasible but highly improbable way.
The other thing that stands out is that this is definitely a kids show. Everything’s wholesome and the characters feel young, which is good news for parents who might blanch at showing their young ones a PG-13 film.
Fast & Furious: Spy Racers debuts on Netflix on December 26.
