‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ Looks Way Better Than Anyone Expected

It plays homage to classic horror films.

Sabrina Spellman looks like she has a doozy of a Sweet 16 birthday coming up. The new trailer previewed what Sabrina is up against in Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which is most certainly not The Sabrina the Teenage Witch you know and love. It’s much creepier and perhaps even scary.

Sabrina, played by Mad Men breakout Kiernan Shipka, has to make a choice: Become one of Satan’s brides or fully join the human world. The young witch seems to do neither to the disappointment of her Aunts Zelda (Lucy Davis) and Hilda (Miranda Otto). but she can raise someone from the dead and make some nice pentagrams, according to the trailer.

If this all weren’t dramatic enough, Sabrina’s favorite teacher, Mary Wardell, has become possessed by the devil’s handmaiden and is hellbent on destroying Sabrina. A show with so many references to Satan is going to be scary.

“I’m not an evil person, but these are desperate times.” Sabrina quips.

It looks like Sabrina and her coven come in contact with some frightening adversaries. She kills a bat with a book in the first few seconds of the trailer, so you know it’s going to get ugly if that’s one of the light-hearted moments of the show.

Based on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comics, made by Archie Comics and created by Sabrina showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the show is bound to be disturbing if it taps into its source material. Aguirre-Sacasa told EW that he plans to pay homage to The Exorcist this series, and there’s a shot in the trailer of Sabrina watching The Night of the Living Dead.

The show is from the executive producers of Riverdale, so you can expect it to be a little campy and for the teen drama to be outrageously high stakes. The trailer teases the main love triangle between Sabrina, Harvey (Ross Lynch) and Nicholas Scratch (Gavin Leatherwood).

As for everyone’s favorite familiar, Salem makes an appearance. We’re not sure how large of a role he’ll be playing in the series yet, but he certainly looks the part. He will be protecting Sabrina in some capacity like a good familiar does.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Part 1 drops on Netflix on October 26.
