The Best Family Entertainment Coming to Netflix in December

Kid-friendly holiday specials are coming to the streaming service, along with some classic comedies, and a full slate of New Year's Eve "Countdowns."

It’s almost that time of year again for roasting chestnuts, lighting Hanukkah candles, and curling up in front of the TV or computer with a cup of hot cocoa for hours on end.

Luckily, Netflix has you and your family covered for all of your streaming needs with a slew of new and returning programs, plus some classic films, coming to the site this December. Highlights certainly include all three of Tim Allen’s Santa Clause films (all three!) and the second season of Guillermo del Toro’s delightful Trollhuntersbut Netflix is also putting out some family-friendly specials for popular franchises, plus a full lineup of “countdowns” for celebrating New Year’s Eve at a reasonable hour. Check out the best of what Netflix has in store for families in the month of December.

A StoryBots Christmas

In this Christmas edition of the original animated Netflix series for kids, Judy Greer and Erin Fitzgerald lend their voices to characters who head to the North Pole to ask Santa for help making better presents.

Arriving: December 1
For Ages: 5+

Nacho Libre

This Jack Black comedy from the director of Napoleon Dynamite isn’t as bad as you might remember. Fart jokes aside (and there are many), the story of an orphan cook who dreams of becoming a famous luchador makes for decent family fun.

Arriving: December 1
For Ages: 9+

The Little Rascals

In this adaptation of the original, early 20th century shorts, young Alfalfa attempts to woo Darla as his “He-Man-Woman-Hating” friends try to sabotage the relationship. Meanwhile, the big Soap Box Derby go-kart race is coming up, and the gang faces some serious competition from one of the most annoying movie kids of all time.

Arriving: December 1
For Ages: 7+

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Get your Marvel fix on Netflix before Disney pulls its titles from the streaming service in 2018. While not as much fun, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a worthy successor to the first, critically-adored space romp. Here, the Guardians fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Plus, it’s got Kurt Russell.

Arriving: December 5
For Ages: 10+

Trolls Holiday

Picking up where the film left off, this holiday film sees Poppy and the rest of the Trolls adjust to living with their Bergen neighbors. After finding out that the Bergens don’t have holidays, Poppy enlists the help of her friends to bring them a celebration.

Arriving: December 6
For Ages: 3+

Disney’s The Santa Clause / The Santa Clause 2 / The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause

Yes, all three films of the Tim Allen franchise in which he becomes Santa Claus are coming to Netflix. Are the sequels both as good as the original? Certainly not. Are they all surprisingly a blast to watch in a row? Absolutely.

Arriving: December 12
For Ages: 7+

Trollhunters: Part 2

The second season of Guillermo del Toro’s action-packed animated series kicks off mid-December. The story follows a mild-mannered teen who becomes a hero in a secret world of trolls. If your family hasn’t checked out the amazing first season yet, there’s still time.

Arriving: December 15
For Ages: 9+

Fuller House (Season 3, New Episodes)

When Netflix’s Full House reunion was first announced, it seemed like an unsustainable gimmick, especially with the absence of Mary-Kate and Ashley. But three seasons deep, the family-friendly sitcom reboot is still tons of fun. Netflix already premiered nine episodes of Season 3 in September, but now nine more episodes featuring the Tanner family and their friends are set to drop in late December.

Arriving: December 22
For Ages: 10+

Netflix New Year’s Eve Countdown

Since 2015, Netflix has put out New Year’s Eve specials each year just before the actual date so kids can celebrate their own countdown and still get to bed at a reasonable hour. This year, they’re releasing a total of nine bite-sized countdowns featuring characters from other acclaimed kids’ shows. Titles include All Hail King Julien, Beat Bugs, Larva, Pororo, Puffin Rock, Skylanders Academy, Trollhunters, True and The Rainbow Kingdom, and Word Party.
