Like that pesky cereal-thieving rabbit, you know tricks are for kids. And for your kid, magicians are right up there with ninjas and pirates as the coolest things a person can be. You’d love for your kid to look at you with the same amazement Dave Chappelle has for David Blaine throwing up a frog, but the closest you get to magic is your ability to make a beer disappear in the blink of an eye. Fortunately for you, illusionist Oscar Owen is here to help. In the video below, Oscar performs 3 coin tricks and then shows you how you can do them yourself. And these aren’t the ‘ole coin behind the ear trick. They’re legitimately cool sleight-of-hand shenanigans that will stupify your audience. Just don’t tell the Alliance of Magicians that somebody is revealing secrets. They take that shit pretty seriously.
First up is “The Production,” where Owen seemingly transports a coin back and forth from one hand to the other. Then “The Vanish,” which is exactly what it sounds like. And finally, “The Jump,” which involves putting a coin under one hand and somehow transporting it to the other. After you’ve spent a good 10 minutes trying to figure out the tricks on your own (“There are mirrors, right?!”), Owen reveals exactly how he makes coins do things that appear to defy the laws of the natural universe. It’s mostly misdirection, sleight of hand, and other tactics that you might use when playing peek-a-boo with your kid.
It might take a bit of practice, but with this video at your disposable, you’ll be making coins disappear quicker than your kid at an arcade before you know it. While you’ll probably never showcase your magic on the Vegas Strip, you’ll certainly have the skills to blow your kid’s tiny, impressionable mind. And if that doesn’t work, just grab some water and make their stick figure dance in front of their eyes. After all, sometimes science does stuff not even magic can explain.
