Death traps by contemporary American standards, “Adventure Playgrounds”, premised on the idea that self-directed play among kids fosters creativity and better risk management, have quietly flourished in Europe since the end of the Second World War. One such playground,The Land, a free-for-all space located in North Wales, is the subject of a documentary by Erin Davis. A fear of litigation has slowed adoption for these spaces stateside, though in many respects Detroit has already taken the lead.
