The Field of Dreams will soon become a reality in Dyersville, Iowa. Today, The Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees announced that they’ll play an official major league game at the Field of Dreams movie site in August, 2020. MLB plans to construct an 8,000 seat ballpark next to the actual set that will allow fans to enjoy the game and experience the movie magic.
“It’s definitely exciting. There’s nothing more American than The Field of Dreams and America’s pastime”, said Roman Weinberg, the director of operations for Go The Distance Baseball, which owns the Field of Dreams movie site. Tom Mietzel, the CEO of Go The Distance Baseball, said construction of that field will begin this month and offer spectacular views the neighboring cornfields. “It’ll be surrounded by corn,” Mietzel said. “It’s going to be beautiful. The layout is incredible. People are going to be awestruck by how incredible it’s going to be.”
Field of Dreams was released in 1989 and starred Kevin Costner as Ray, an Iowa corn farmer who’s compelled by a mysterious voice to build a baseball diamond in his fields. The film also centers around the 1919 White Sox, “Shoeless Joe Jackson”, a real White Sox player who was banned by the MLB for his alleged participation in the White Sox throwing the 1919 World Series.
The game, which will pay homage to the film and its dedicated fans, will take place at 6 p.m. on August 13, 2020. But don’t worry if you can’t snag tickets; the event will be televised on FOX.
