One woman’s vaccination records are causing a stir on social media. In a Reddit post last week, the 20-something woman, who was raised by anti-vaxxer parents, revealed that she finally got vaccinated.
“My parents denied me vaccinations as a child,” wrote user ToddmanHorseboy on January 2. “Today, I was finally able to take my health into my own hands!” The photo of her medical records shows that she received seven shots, including ones for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, tetanus, MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), chickenpox, and HPV.
She explains that the reasons her parents gave for being anti-vaxxers were “autism,” “you don’t know what’s in them,” and “against [our] religion,” despite the fact that her brother got whooping cough when he was 10 years old.
The post already has 175,000 upvotes on Reddit and nearly 6,000 comments. The majority of people are praising the anonymous woman for getting her vaccinations. “You did a great job getting the help you needed on your own time when your parents didn’t, that doesn’t happen every day,” one user wrote. Another said, “Thank you for caring about the rest of humanity and congratulations on getting vaccinated.”
However, the woman is also receiving her share of outraged comments from anti-vaxxers. One asked, “Did the doctors tell you how long you have before you melt into an amorphous blob due to all the chemicals?”
In a follow-up “Ask Me Anything” post, the woman reveals that her mother is aware that she got her shots and while she doesn’t agree with the decision, she understands its no longer up to her.
“She mentioned how she knows I am old enough to make these choices now,” the young woman said. “She realizes she can’t change my mind, and fighting it will only cause distance between us… she knows I will stick up for myself.”
