The debut trailer for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, the Mister Rogers biopic, was released today and in what should come as a surprise to no one, Tom Hanks looks like the perfect fit to play the iconic children’s host, as Hanks manages to capture the boundless empathy that made Rogers such a beloved figure for millions of viewers around the world.
The film is based on journalist Tom Junod (played Matthew Rhys) writing an article for Esquire about Rogers back in 1998, as he attempts to get to know Rogers, including asking him if he sees himself as a hero. Along the way, a bond begins to form and it looks like Rogers is able to help Junod with some of his personal struggles.
Of course, the real focus of the trailer is Hanks’ portrayal of Rogers and it looks like America’s father figure knocked it out of the park. The two-time Oscar winner may not win a Rogers look-a-like contest but he nails the gentle spirit that we all know and love, even having the same twinkle in his eye that Rogers famously had. In the trailer, Rogers speaks about his mission to help people express their feelings in a positive way and it’s easy to forget you’re not watching an episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.
We can’t wait to get to watch this movie but unfortunately, it won’t be here until around Thanksgiving. Based on the trailer, don’t be surprised if Hanks gets some Oscar buzz for his performance.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood comes to theaters November 22, 2019.
