New ‘Rise of Skywalker’ Trailer Teases a Shocking Twist

Is it just a Force dream or could Luke's apprentice be following in the steps of Anakin?

To close out the D23 Expo, Disney has released a brand new trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the trailer gives fans a glimpse at what may be the final showdown between Kylo Ren and Rey, along with hinting at the latter finally giving into the power of the Dark Side.

The trailer begins by showing scenes of the previous eight Star Wars episodes before showing brief glimpses of our remaining heroes, including Poe Dameron, Finn, and General Leia. But the focus of the trailer is all on Rey, as we see her continuing her training as Luke’s Force Ghost voice provides some words of wisdom for his apprentice.

“We passed on all we know,” Luke tells her. “A thousand generations live in you now. This is your fight.”

But is it possible that Rey might actually be pulling an Anakin and embracing the power of the Dark Side? It’s certainly hinted at in the trailer. While we see Rey and Kylo battling it out as waves violently crash around them, we also hear the voice of Palpatine issuing an ominous statement.

“Your journey nears its end,” the Sith Lord says.

At first, you might assume Palpatine is talking to Kylo but we then hear the iconic breathing of Vader before Rey in full Sith mode, wielding a Darth Maul-esque lightsaber. Is this just some strange Force vision or could Rey really be switching teams at the last moment? We can’t wait to find out.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker comes to theaters December 20.
