Amazon Just Released a Trailer For Its ‘Rocky and Bullwinkle’ Reboot

The famous duo will come to Amazon Prime Video in mid-May.

Rejoice, cartoon lovers: Amazon today released the trailer for its reboot of The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. While the classic cartoon is looking sleek, the trailer confirms that it will keep some of the old-school animation stylings from the original, as well as a handful of iconic side characters like Russian spies Boris and Natasha, and Fearless Leader, the evil genius hellbent on world domination

The reboot — which is slated for release on May 11th — will be available through Amazon Kids. The show, the result of a partnership between Amazon Prime Video and the DreamWorks Animation studio, is being produced by Scott Fellows (of Fairly Oddparents fame) and Tiffany Ward, the daughter of producer Jay Ward, who helmed the original series.

The most-recent high-profile attempt to revive the iconic moose and squirrel duo, 2000’s semi-live-action film The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, was a failure with both critics and audiences alike. The film, which starred Rene Russo and Jason Alexander, earned less than half of its $75 million budget, and the Rotten Tomatoes consensus was that while “true to the nature of the original cartoon,” the film had a script that could only be described as “disappointing and not funny.”

It’s not surprising that a company like Amazon would give Rocky and Bullwinkle another shot. The new series is part of a reboot trend in classic cartoons, with staples like Inspector Gadget, The Magic School Bus, and Care Bears all coming to Netflix soon. If the revival trend isn’t enough of a reason to get hyped, well, it’s a show with Russian spies, which feels timely.
