Jimmy Kimmel is one of pop culture’s most enduring and creative jesters. But the late-night host also become one of the key voices in the fight against President Trump’s attempts to repeal Obamacare, pleading with politicians to not take health care away from families after his own son had to undergo heart surgery immediately following his birth. A few weeks later, Kimmel gave an impassioned and sincere speech about his experience that humanized the healthcare debate. His words resonated with the public and several politicians, including Louisiana senator Bill Cassidy. In May, Cassidy even appeared on Kimmel’s show to offer his support to the late night host and promise to fight for health care for everyone. Now, however, it appears Cassidy is not living up to his promise, as last night, Kimmel called the senator out, accusing him of lying to his face and failing to live up to his promises.
During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Cassidy promised that any new health care law would have to pass “The Jimmy Kimmel Test”, which means a bill must provide coverage for everyone, not discriminate based on pre-existing conditions, reduce premiums for middle-class families, and have no lifetime caps. But Kimmel complained that the new health care bill Cassidy co-authored with Senator Lindsey Graham does none of those things.
Kimmel was visibly upset that Cassidy did not live up to his word and even asked the senator to stop using his name when he talked about the bill because “I don’t want my name on it.” He even invited Cassidy back onto the show, saying, “There’s a new Jimmy Kimmel test for you, it’s called the lie detector test. You’re welcome to stop by the studio and take it anytime.”
Finally, Kimmel asked viewers to call their senators to let them know that they are dissatisfied with Cassidy and Graham’s bill. Because if we can’t count on our politicians to keep their promises and take care of children, he said, it’s up to all of us to come together and demand better.
