This Viral Soccer Photo Remains the Perfect Celebration of Co-Parenting

"Because of us, I will never believe co-parenting can't work!"

It’s no secret that co-parenting can be a complicated beast. There are varying opinions on how it should be handled (if at all), but we can all pretty much agree that the child’s best interest should be a top priority.  One stepmom‘s viral post is a reminder that under the right circumstances, co-parenting can be fulfilling for everyone involved.

Emilee Player of  Columbus, Georgia posted a now-viral photo of her blended family supporting her 4-year-old stepdaughter Maelyn at her soccer game. Maelyn’s two sets of parents are seen sporting jerseys that say “Mommy”, “Daddy”, “Stepmom”, and “Stepdad.” And though the photo was posted two years ago, Parents.com published new comments from Player about her thoughts about co-parenting and why the photo mattered to so many people.

“Because of us, I will never believe co-parenting can’t work!” Player captioned the post. “I KNOW through the experience it CAN WORK! Choose to do what’s best for your child and everything will just fall into place.”

Player also told Parents.com that the four of them have been co-parenting Maelyn for the past three years. Despite a fair amount of criticism, they’ve stayed true to what works best for them. “[We’ve had] people saying this is not the way things should be and that we are confusing our daughter,” Player says. “In my eyes, what we’re doing should be normal. There’s so much hate in this world these days. Our kids deserve to see the love we have towards one another.”

The positive response to the post is overwhelming, with over 88,000 shares and tons of supportive comments. “KUDOS to you for putting your kids first!” one comment reads. “Why is it so difficult for some families? Separation and alienation destroyed my family. I pray the court systems in this country begin to recognize the damage caused my jealous & bitter parents/step-parents.”

Co-parenting is certainly not for everyone, but it’s nice to see a family choosing to work together and steer clear of unnecessary tension.
