A video showing New York police officers violently ripping a baby away from his mother has people both furious and horrified. In the disturbing clip, which surfaced Monday, the officers pull the Jazmine Headley’s one-year-old son away as she lies on the floor screaming.
“You’re hurting my son! You’re hurting my son!” Headley can be heard shouting, as the police yank her baby out of her grasp at the Human Resources Administration office in Brooklyn on Friday. Police say they had been called to the scene to remove the 23-year-old for “her disorderly conduct towards others, and for obstructing the hallway.”
Following the arrest, during which bystanders say an officer pulled a stun gun on the crowd, Headley was charged on four different counts: endangering a child’s welfare, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and trespassing.
“No mother should have to experience the trauma and humiliation we all witnessed in this video,” public advocate and state attorney general-elect Letitia James told The New York Times. “The actions of the NYPD in this video are appalling and contemptible.”

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams agrees, saying in a news conference on Monday, “The mother didn’t endanger the welfare of the child. The actions of the department endangered the welfare of the child. If it’s wrong in Mexico, then it’s wrong in New York City.”
The New York Police Department has stated that the video is under review, calling it “troubling.” According to authorities, all of the charges against Headley, who is being held at Rikers Island for a credit card fraud warrant, have been dropped.
The child is currently in the custody of grandmother Jacqueline Jenkins, who says, “I can’t believe the NYPD, how they handled it, the force of what they did to grab my grandson like that. He was like a rag doll.”
