USDA Recalls 60 Tons of Beef Due to Potential E. Coli Contamination

Here is everything you need to know about the latest food recall.

The United States Department of Agriculture has recalled more than 60 tons of ground beef due to fear of possible E. Coli contamination. At least one person has already died because of the contamination and at least 17 others have fallen ill after eating the beef, which was distributed by Cargill Meat Solutions.

According to officials, approximately 132,606 pounds of ground beef packaged in one of 12 different Cargill products on June 21 of this year could be contaminated and is being recalled. Anyone who purchased one of the listed products is being urged to throw the beef away or return it to the store for a refund. The USDA has classified it as a Class I recall, which means that there is a “reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.” Here is the USDA’s official list of recalled products.

This is the latest in a long string of food and beverage recalls issued this year, including Honey Smacks, Goldfish, Ritz Crackers, and Almond Milk, all of which were recalled due to Salmonella contamination. Last month, Cargill Meat Solutions recalled more than 25,000 pounds of ground beef due to concerns of E. Coli contamination.

E. Coli is a bacteria that is most often found in human or animal intestines. While most types of E. Coli are perfectly safe for humans to ingest, certain types can cause infections and diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. In more serious cases, E. Coli infections can lead to dehydration, kidney failure, and even death. People with weaker immune systems, including young children and pregnant women, are highly susceptible to infections from E. Coli. While most people will recover from an E. Coli infection in less than a week, more serious cases can often require medical treatment.
