Why The U.S. Happiness Gap Might Kind Of Sort Of Be Your Fault

You might already know that the U.S. is the unlucky 13th happiest country in the world, despite being the world leader in bragging. But you may not know that you and your fellow breeders may be to blame. According to a recent study of 22 European and English-speaking countries, the U.S. has the most unhappy parents in the world. We’re still number one is some ways, and those are exactly the areas are where you’re getting screwed.

Using data from the International Social Surveys of 2007 and 2008 and the European Social Surveys of 2006 and 2008, researchers discovered that the U.S. had the largest parent happiness gap in comparison to any other industrialized nation, including the U.K. and Australia. In countries like Norway, Sweden, Finland, Hungary, and  even Russia, parents actually reported being happier than people without kids. What separated happy parents from unhappy ones were policies that made it easier for families to find a work-life balance, including paid family leave, more than 10 days of vacation you can never take, and affordable childcare. No wonder you’re so pissed — even parents under Putin have it better than you.

Study Figures Out Why American Parents Are So Unhappy

This might explain why fewer and fewer people are reproducing in America, but even that might not turn the tide of our collective discontent. The study also found that when parent-friendly policies were prioritized it made everyone happier, including non-parents. Sure, they’ve had it too good for too long, but if everyone wins that’s one way to help you stop losing.
