Any kid who grew up playing with Legos recalls wishing, more than anything, that the weird and elaborate sculptures they created would come to life somehow. You didn’t just want to build an enormous Lego death star but you wanted to pilot it around your house too. Well, Lego has dreamed the dream in real life and used over a million pieces of Lego Technic with over 2,000 Lego motors to make a drivable life-sized Bugatti Chiron.
Now, the actual Bugatti Chiron can go at almost 300 miles per hour. Of course, the Lego version can only travel a little bit above 18 miles per hour, but that doesn’t make the creation any less fascinating. Lego has actually been building the car since September of 2017 and has just finished almost one year later.
What is perhaps the most interesting part, besides the fact that the car can actually be driven, is the fact that the builders used no glue during construction. Instead, the car uses a steel frame to support the tiny plastic bits. The only thing on the model that actually isn’t made of Lego is the vehicle’s drivetrain (Lego tires might have been too tall of an order). Beyond that, the taillights, headlights, doors, and mirrors are all fully functional, as well as the steering wheel.
The motors are housed in the trunk of the car and connected to 2,016 axle pieces bound by 4,032 plastic gears. Unfortunately, Lego has no intention of making the plans available to buy, beyond that, you’d have to spend tens of thousands of dollars on the process once you factor in the almost 13,500 hours of labor that went into making the machine fully functional. And, that’s all without mentioning all of the months of prep work that took place before the year of building started.
Still, building a Bugatti Chiron out of Legos sounds better than dropping almost $3 million on a real one. Plus, you’ll save a boatload on insurance going the Lego route.
