Crazy Debate About Bath Towels Is Tearing the Internet Apart

Even Chrissy Teigen is getting in on it.

How many towels should you own? And how many is too many? That’s the viral question that has Twitter abuzz, as everyone (even celebs like Chrissy Teigen) chime in with their own bath linen preferences.

It all started with a tweet by astro-photographer Abdul Dremali on Sunday afternoon. “Hello fellow adults. my gf and i have a question… what is the correct amount of towels to own?,” @Advil wrote. “I said 10 and she looked at me like i was crazy. we have zero frame of reference on the appropriate amount of towels in a household of two.”

And it was a response by Huffington Post journalist Yashar Ali that really fired up the Internet. Ali said that couples should have a minimum of “couples should own “10 Bath Sheets. 10 Bath Towels. 10 Hand Towels. 20 Wash Cloths” and “preferably more.”

The responses started pouring in quickly—and it turns out that people have very strong opinions on towels. (Dremali’s tweet already has over 2,200 comments and nearly 10,000 likes.)

Many people were first confused by what Ali calls a “bath sheet.” She clarified with a helpful diagram designating the different types of bath linens, to which one user said, “Bath sheets are a tax on tall people.”

There were some people who shared Ali’s excessive towel collection. “My roommate uses a new one every time he showers and thinks it’s normal,” wrote one person.

Even Chrissy Teigen had an opinion on the matter, tweeting to Ali, “20 wash cloths????? this is too many wash cloths.”

And as for the original poster? Dremali, who now calls himself a Towel Influencer™, is blown away by the viral success of what began as an innocent inquiry. “My girlfriend wanted new towels and caused a worldwide crisis: a memoir,” he tweeted in an update on Monday night.
