Donald Trump Changes Position On Family Leave, Forgets Dads

There are less than 8 weeks until the next presidential election, and infinitely more reasons to hit your head against the wall rather than hear another damn thing about it. Well, you might want to put on a helmet, because there’s something very important you need to know about Trump’s proposed family leave policy: You’re not a part of it. Nope, not even by accident.

Trump Leave Policy Forgets Fathers

Despite proposing a 6-week paid leave policy this past Tuesday, it seems like more of a throwback Thursday move: Trump plans to give the leave and tax credits to working mothers only. While this seems to be a last-ditch effort to appeal to women voters (who love doing all the childcare themselves), Agent Orange’s time machine appears to have malfunctioned. Regardless of where you stand politically, this plan screws both moms and dads, forcing both sides into roles that may not be compatible with contemporary families. Oh, and it does not include any paternity leave or leave for a mother who adopted her child or whose partner gave birth. So there’s that.

As Working Mother Media Editorial Director Jennifer Owens points out to The Huffington Postif there’s one good thing to come out of Trump’s announcement it’s getting parents to talk about every candidates’ family leave policies . “Yes, I would like [Trump’s plan] to be better and include men and make sure it’s broad,” she said, “but on the good side I’m glad because him talking about it means people are talking about it.” If you’re hoping to find any work-life balance outside of the 1950s, you have 53 days to not stop talking about it.
