In today’s age of social media, keeping kids safe becomes even more challenging and complex. Blink-182 dummer Travis Barker was confronted with every parent’s worst nightmare when his 13-year-old daughter Alabama Barker received messages from 20-year-old Echosmith drummer Graham Sierota.
In the screenshots that Alabama posted to her Instagram stories, it appears that Sierota began messaging her backing 2016, when she would have been just 10 years old. His first several messages were simply “Hi” over and over, but later Sierota told Barker she was beautiful and earlier this month, invited her to a barbecue at his home. She captioned the screenshots by saying: “Hey guys! So once again I am bringing this to your attention because I’m a 13 year old girl and he is 21/20 super creepy.”
Travis Barker was, of course, enraged when he caught wind of the situation. “When I found out a 20 year old man was trying to get in touch with my 13 year old daughter by filling her Instagram messages with party invites and compliments I was disgusted,” the 43-year-old told The Blast. “That’s predatory behavior and there is nothing cool, normal or ok about it at all.”
Alabama later shared an update in which she said that Sierota had apologized and she forgave him. The 20-year-old also shared his thoughts with The Blast, saying: “I didn’t realise she was a minor and assumed she was my age. I made a careless mistake and this is a big lesson for me.” This sort of situation is becoming frightinengly common as kids navigate social media, but thankfully, Barker and his family managed to walk away unscathed.
