Trailer for Pixar’s ‘Onward’ Brings Suburban Boredom to the Fantasy World

It's like 'Office Space' meets 'Lord of the Rings.'

For over two decades, Pixar has been the defining name for phenomenal kid’s movies and now, the studio is hoping to strike gold again with Onward, the newest film which focuses on a fantasy world that has left behind epic quests and grand adventures in favor of the quiet stability of suburban bliss. The trailer opens with fantasy tropes that will look all too familiar to any Lord of the Rings or Dungeons & Dragons fan: mythical creatures galloping around a majestic mountain range when suddenly, a plane flies by and you realize this is not going to be your standard fantasy tale.

From there, we get a humorous montage of unicorns, jackrabbits, and other fabled creatures living seemingly mundane lives. A centaur waves at her neighbor during her morning run, a mermaid sits in an inflatable pool to beat the summer heat, and, in what is hopefully a clever nod to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, drivers are forced to pay a literal troll toll.

After getting familiar with the broader world, we meet our protagonists: Barley and Ian Lightfoot, two elf brothers voiced by Chris Pratt and Tom Holland, respectively. The two are heading on a road trip, which the idealistic Barley keeps insisting is a “quest”, while Ian will only refer to it as “a really fast and strange errand.” What is this quest/errand? It’s not yet clear but according to the trailer’s description, it involves discovering “if there is still a little magic left out there.”

Onward comes to theaters March 6, 2020.
