Netflix Is Rebooting Jim Henson’s ‘The Dark Crystal’

Even better, the Henson Company is returning to produce the entire 10-episode series.

Fresh off announcing the return of legendary ’80s animated icon She-Ra, Netflix dropped another bomb on nostalgic fantasy fans this week by releasing a teaser for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a prequel to the 1982 film The Dark Crystal. Similar to its predecessor, which was directed by Jim Henson, the new Netflix prequel will also be handled by the Jim Henson company.

The Dark Crystal revolved around Jen, a young elf-like creature who was on a quest to return a lost shard of a powerful crystal to its original resting place and, in turn, restore balance to life on the fictional planet of Thra. The Netflix prequel will consist of ten episodes and will explore the planet long before the events of the original film. It will follow three creatures similar to Jen who discover the power source (presumably the crystal shard from the original film) of the evil wizards who terrorize their planet. Once they learn of this, they’ll set out to “ignite the fires of rebellion.”

One of the most exciting things about the prequel is that thanks to the Henson Company’s involvement, a lot of the rich aesthetic and complex lore that made the original so compelling can be replicated. Jim Henson notably called The Dark Crystal the most difficult work he’d ever done, but also the most fun and rewarding. At the end of a long and distinguished career, he still said it was the film he was most proud of. That’s a lot for the new series to live up to. As of now, there’s no official release date.
