The Trailer for the Live-Action ‘Lion King’ Will Blow You Away

Hakuna Matata is officially our motto for 2019.

While everyone was winding down from epic Thanksgiving feasts, Disney dropped a surprise trailer for the live-action Lion King during the NFL’s traditional primetime game. This is the first look fans have had of the remake of the 1994 movie. Some people were skeptical of Disney doing a live-action movie without any human characters, but Disney put any doubt to rest with this epic trailer that perfectly paid homage to the original animated movie.

You’ll get chills and a sense of deja vu while watching this. Disney and Lion King director Jon Favreau recreated the 1994 trailer shot-for-shot, which is an amazing feat and really shows that Favreau is going to do his best to respectfully remake one of the Disney classics. “The Circle of Life” plays as the animal kingdom assembles to watch Rafiki introduce baby Simba as the heir to Pride Rock. The CGI is stunning. Simba looks even more alarmed and uncomfortable at being hoisted up than he did in the original.

The voice cast for this movie is stacked. If Mufasa sounded identical to his animated counterpart, that’s because James Earl Jones has reprised his role as Mufasa for this movie. Donald Glover is Simba, Beyoncé is Nala, Seth Rogen is Pumbaa, Billy Eichner is Timon and Chiwetel Ejiofor is Scar.

At the end of the trailer, we even get a sneak peek at full-grown Simba looking pretty fierce. If Simba looks this threatening, we can’t imagine what Scar looks like.

Even though the trailer has been out for less than 24 hours, it’s gotten more than 10 million views on YouTube. That’s an extremely high number of views and confirms that this movie is definitely one of the most anticipated 2019 blockbusters.

The Lion King is out in theaters July 19, 2019.
