Great Balls of Fire: ‘Top Gun 2’ Is Happening

According to a recent Tom Cruise tweet, production may have already begun.

Kick the tires and light the fires! Rumors have been circulating about a sequel to the cult classic Top Gun for years, but holy hell, a recent tweet from Tom Cruise has blown everybody away. Not only did Cruise confirm that Top Gun 2: Maverick is happening, but he suggests that filming has already begun. The actor’s post contains a picture from the first Top Gun with the words “FEEL THE NEED,“a callback to the famous line from the original. The tweet’s caption reads “#Day1.”

When Top Gun premiered in 1986, the world was in the thick of an obsession with sprawling guitar rock ballads and leather jackets. And as the years passed, the movie slowly became emblematic of an almost-cheesy 80’s action drama. Granted, Top Gun aged well, surprisingly well even, but you couldn’t take it quite as seriously as movies like Platoon or Labyrinth, both of which also dropped in the same year.

In terms of aesthetics and special effects, Top Gun was certainly cutting edge, but, it’ll be interesting to see how the film reconciles its super nostalgic roots with the technological and narrative expectations of 2018. There are more predator drones flying around than actual fighter pilots these days. Will Kenny Loggins “Danger Zone” play in the opening credits? How about Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away,”? While both songs actually sound as old as they are, they still feel somewhat venerated today.

By the looks of it, the original film’s producer Jerry Bruckheimer will also be making a return while Joseph Kosinski, who worked with Cruise on the film Oblivion, has been tapped to direct. The original director Tony Scott was excited about the prospect of a Top Gun 2 but tragically passed in 2012. In Scott’s final days, he and Cruise were reportedly together doing research for the movie.“It’s true. I’m going to start probably in the next year. I know, it’s happening,” Cruise told Australian TV show Sunrise at the time. Top Gun 2: Maverick is set to hit theaters in July 2019.
