On Monday night, rock and roll legend Tom Petty died at the age of 66 after going into cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu. To the world, Petty was one of the greatest rock icons of all time, penning countless hits over the course of his long career as frontman for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. “Free Falling,” “Won’t Back Down,” and “American Girl” are but three people will certainly still be signing 25 years from now.
But to Annakim Violette Petty, Tom Petty was just dad. And while waiting at UCLA Medical Center during the last hours of his life, Annakim, the youngest of Tom’s two daughters, shared some of her favorite photos and memories of her dad on Instagram. They showed a side of Petty that the general public rarely got to see.
One of the more touching photos is a blurry, slightly out of focus selfie of Petty and Annakim with the caption: “We are all the mirror of divine love.”
Annakim also posted a photo of a much younger Petty holding her when she was just a baby.
Annakim also told some stories about Petty as a dad, including the fact that he would make her matching versions of outfits he wore onstage. She shared a picture of one of the jackets, which still fits her to this day.
After Petty’s death, Annakim simply hoped that her dad was resting in peace.
Petty rarely spoke about his personal life in interviews, so getting such an intimate glimpse into his life as a father is something that fans were extremely grateful for. From the photos shared by Annakim, it looks like Petty had a loving relationship with his daughters.
