The upcoming Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw isn’t just a blockbuster for ampersand enthusiasts. It’s also a rare chance to see two of the literal sexiest men alive battle it out on the big screen.
In an interview with USA Today, Johnson talked about the friendly rivalry he has with his co-star.
“He came on set full of bravado because, as a matter of fact, the story dropped while we were in London,” Johnson said. “I reminded him ‘Yes, you are People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive of 2019. I, however, am the Sexiest Man Alive in what is called ‘perpetuity.’ That means for life.'”
David Leitch, the director of the film, confirmed that The Rock did congratulate Elba, “but it was clear he doesn’t want to give up the mantel.”
In an appearance on The Late Show to promote the film, Elba pushed back when Stephen Colbert said that he’d lose the title in November when People names a new winner.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa it says alive. As long as I’m alive…” he said, trailing off with the clear implication that he, too, intended to hold the title in perpetuity.
“Your co-star Dwayne Johnson was the Sexiest Man Alive in 2016, so how can there be two Sexiest Men Alive? It’s like the Highlander, there can only be one,” Colbert asked.
“Dwayne hasn’t let it go. It’s sad,” Elba joked, before rattling off the sexy things he’d done in the year of his reign, including DJ’ing in Ibiza, getting married, and perfecting a squinty, sexy facial expression.
While he definitely gets points for the DJ thing, the Rock is also married and, quite frankly, he’s not going to lose a facial expression contest any time soon.
