The announcement that 19-year-old Halle Bailey would play Ariel in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid film threw a wrench in everyone’s casting expectations – in the best way possible. As the second black Disney princess ever, people have been speculating on who would be cast as her dad, aka King Triton. Idris Elba and Terry Crews quickly became popular contenders on social media, with Crews even jumping in to say he was totally down. Now, he’s taken things a step further by posting his very own audition tape.
Talks around King Triton’s casting began after Twitter user @BossLogic created fan art of Idris Elba as King Triton, flowing white hair and all. People were quick to rally around Elba in the role, but when Terry Crews responded with some (hilarious) fan art of his own, fans were all for it.
The 50-year-old actor clearly knows what he wants, because he later followed up his post with another, more realistic rendering of himself as Triton on Instagram. “IF YA’LL LIKE THIS ENOUGH MAYBE IT’LL HAPPEN!” he captioned the image.
And now, he’s presenting Disney with an (un)official audition tape via Twitter with his rendition of “Under the Sea.” In the clip, Crews gives his spin on the well-known tune with some new lyrics “Under the sea / Under the sea / My pecs are better / My Triton is bigger / Take it from me / Need a refresher? / Watch AGT!” he sings, amidst photoshopped bubbles.

We’re also entertaining the possibility that this entire campaign is just a promo for Crews’ show, America’s Got Talent, since he’s been mentioning it in every post. Either way, we’re totally for it.
