Teen Crashes Car While Attempting the Bird Box Challenge

Don't try this at home.

A teen driver in Utah crashed her car last week while trying to do the Bird Box challenge behind the wheel. According to authorities, the 17-year-old girl was driving blindfolded when she hit another car.

“Bird Box Challenge while driving…predictable result,” read a tweet by the Layton City Police Department on Friday morning. “This happened on Monday as a result of the driver covering her eyes while driving on Layton Parkway. Luckily no injuries.”

Lieutenant Travis Lyman says that the teen, who was driving a pickup truck with a friend in the passenger seat, pulled a beanie over her eyes before crashing into another car, followed by a light pole and a sound wall. While no one was hurt, the girl now faces a potential reckless driving charge.

The viral Internet challenge that the teen was attempting began following the release of popular Netflix film Bird Box. In the movie, which stars Sandra Bullock, people wear blindfolds to avoid seeing a deadly paranormal force—and now teens are doing the same in real life, by attempting everyday tasks, like shopping or driving, with their eyes covered.

Earlier this month, Netflix issued a warning against the challenge. The streaming service tweeted, “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”
