In the first season of Netflix’s Stranger Things, Steve Harrington was portrayed, at best, as an all-American yet semi-likable douche. By the end of season two, however, Steve had blossomed into a charming babysitter extraordinaire, stealing the Internet’s hearts in the process. Doubling down on the transformation, Netflix has announced that “Dad Steve,” along with his beautiful head of hair, will be a part of the next chapter.
The announcement was made by executive producer Shawn Levy on the red carpet in front of the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The creative team behind Stranger Things would later speak to an excited audience about working on-set and the future of the show. Levy also pointed out during his interview that the show-runners had no idea “dad Steve” would be such a hit.
“We’ll definitely get to see some more of Steve Harrington in season three, and I’ll just say we won’t be abandoning the Dad Steve magic,” said Levy. “I don’t want to say much more, but I literally feel that we were walking along and we stumbled onto a gold mine with Dad Steve.”
It’ll be nice to see the kinder, gentler version of Steve get some love. During season two, the relationship between Nancy and Steve eroded, as she fell for Jonathan; for his part, Steve used that heartbreak to continue his transformation into a more vulnerable kind of jock. While that pushed him closer to Nancy’s younger brother Will and his group of friends in a really positive way, it was also around that point in season two that he caught a pretty savage beating from the new asshole jock in town, Billy Hargrove.
Steve Harrington’s progression from dick to dad is a perfect example of how tapping into your sensitive side can help you come out the other side a better person. While he might still have some residual bitterness to work through come season 3, we’re excited for the return of everyone’s favorite teenage dad.
