Imagine waking up one day and realizing that your dad is one of the most famous athletes in the world. That’s exactly what happened for Riley Curry and David Lucca da Silva Santos and in a recent interview for The Players’ Tribune, basketball superstar Steph Curry and Brazilian soccer legend Neymar revealed what that special moment was like.
The two dads were hanging out courtside in Paris at what happens to be the oldest basketball court in the world, discussing everything from handling game-time pressure to making time for their families, as part of The Players’ Tribune “The Crossover” series. When the conversation turned to their kids, specifically how their little ones feel about having celeb-status dads, Steph laughed.
“She had a thing where, when she saw me with regular clothes, she called me Daddy. But then when I put the jersey on I was always Stephen Curry, number 30,” the Golden State Warriors point guard reminisced about his oldest daughter, Reilly. “And that was the point where I realized like, they notice everything about you.” (Yes, we’re sure even his six-year-old noticed that her father is thought to be the greatest NBA shooter of all time…)
Neymar, who plays forward for French football club Paris Saint-Germain and who is considered one of the best soccer players in the world, then chimed in with a story about his own son Davi.
“I was on TV. So my son said, ‘That’s my dad.’ And then one of his friends said, ‘No, that’s not your dad.’ And my son, ‘Yes, he is my dad.’ And my son’s friend, ‘No, Neymar can’t be your dad,’” he described. “And my son was a bit sad because no one believed I was his dad.”
